Basset Hounds are among the most pleasant-natured and easygoing of all breeds. They were bred for hunting small game such as rabbits and are still used for this purpose in some parts of the United States. When they’re not on the trail of a bunny, they’re laid-back family friends who love kids.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Basset Hound that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 50 to 65 pounds
Height: Up to 14 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years

The name Basset comes from the French word Bas, meaning low. And Basset Hounds certainly are low to the ground. Because their bones are heavy and they are muscular, they usually weigh 50 to 65 pounds although they typically are no more than 14 inches tall at the highest point of the shoulder. In reality, they are big dogs on short legs. Their short-legged appearance is the result of a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. Despite his large size, the Basset believes he’s a lap dog and will do his best to fit in yours.

Bassets are scent hounds, meaning that they were bred to hunt by following the scent of their prey. Their phenomenal sense of smell is second only to that of the Bloodhound. Basset Hounds have smooth, short, hard-textured coats that are relatively easy to take care of. Most of them come in the classic tri-color pattern of black, tan, and white, but they can also be what’s known as open red and white (red spots on a white coat), closed red and white (solid red with white feet and tail), or lemon and white. On occasion, you may see a gray (also called blue) Basset, but this color is considered undesirable because it’s thought to be associated with genetic problems.

The mild-mannered Basset is too laid-back to ever be sharp-tempered. He gets along with everyone, kids and other animals included, and the only thing that gets him really excited is a good scent trail. He’s calm indoors but alert enough that he makes an excellent watchdog. Like all hounds, he can be stubborn when it comes to training and responds best to positive methods such as food rewards and food rewards. Bassets are pack dogs and will be unhappy if left alone all day. The company of another dog is helpful.

  1. agh I just love basset hounds they are so loving, mine (her name is Taloulah, Ta-lu-la) is 8 months old and she is definitely super crazy and still bites us but she I still love her and its just the cutest when she lays down and all her little chub and ahhh

  2. My basset hound used to attack and murder every Iguana that got into my yard. Iguanas almost the size of him. Never thought murder could look so cute.

  3. So Bassets Have good Smell, their Ears Kicks up Smell and their extra Skin holds smells in place

We Get it God, they live to smell

  4. Something that goes unsaid about these dogs, is the fact that they’re really good at detecting sickness or injury

  5. We adopted our Bassett when she was 7 years old and she has been the most wonderful dog. She loves her walks and has no problem being active, but she is more than happy the be in the house sleeping. She rarely barks or howls (not sure if this has something to do with her previous life). She is very well behaved, perfectly housebroken, and gets along with everyone and every animal. Especially babies! She is so calm and gentle with them. She is not so food driven and we don’t have many issues with overeating. She does sheds A LOT. But as the video said, combing them out helps some (but not all). She is kind and happy and has no separation anxiety (even being the only dog in the house). We completely lucked out and I am so happy we found her. Basset hounds rock!

  6. One of the most sweetest, lovable, caring dogs around, annoying at times, but very loyal and great guard dogs their bark is so loud sounds spooky at night, theyre fearless too

  7. Our trainer gave us our money back. We worked with on our own and she was eventually great on the leash and all the other stuff (when she wanted to). Sweet, gentle dogs.

  8. Hands down worse breed of dog there is. My ol lady has one of these POS. I'm good, used to love dogs till I had the honor of living with a basset hound. I know every dog is different ya ya, just my own opinion based off my own experiences.

  9. My family and I grew up with Basset Hounds. By far the best family dog. Whoever said they’re not smart never spent a lot of time around them because they know what they want + hilariously mischievous too.

  10. Our lovable Fred came to us 2 years and 2 months ago, and I couldn’t imagine having a different or better dog!! He is happiest when he is laying on top of our feet and eating…. Eating anything and everything. We definitely have to watch his food intake or I believe he would never stop! LOL.

  11. I have a beautiful smart gem of a basset hound. She is the light of my life and I can't be without her by my side for very long.

  12. My grandmother had a Basset named Cleo. She was such a sweet, gentle girl. She was so loving, so cute, and loved everyone, always in a good mood, and yes, VERY food motivated, lol. Some may call Bassets Hush Puppies, but I call them Cleos. Cleo died in 1987, and I still miss her, that's how wonderful she was.

  13. My female Bassett Hound only loves her dad. No one else, there used to help her in her life to look out the window as she's to short and to rub her belly when she wants it done

  14. This is truly precious!! We have our first Basset Hound, Mando. He just turned a year old. He is a total Mama Boy. He's stubborn, thick headed, a brat, and just perfect! He hasn't yet howled. When I am gone, my husband says he cries the entire time. He can be a little territorial with our other dogs when I'm around. I continue to use positive reinforcement to train him to not snip at the other dogs. He does like to play with certain squeaky toys. He'll entertain himself. After five minutes of playing, he'll plop down. He'll learn what he will be suit him. We trained him how to use the doggy stairs to get into bed. Any other commands, he'll look at us like we're crazy. Mando is a brat and a perfect definition of a Basset Hound.

  15. My daughters mom is building a house and they couldnt their dog to the rental. Ive had her 1yr old bassett hound big al aka biggle for a couple months. Little bastards won me over. So Im wanting to know about him.
