In today’s video, we are going to talk about some interesting facts and myths about the Turkish Angora Cat.

A sweet, quiet cat, the Turkish angora is loyal and affectionate but can also become upset by sudden changes in her environment. Once the Turkish Angora gets an idea into his head, it can be difficult to change his mind about how he should behave, but he is so charming that you probably won’t care.

With their high intelligence and gorgeous white fur, it’s easy to see why the Turkish Angora is a national treasure in their home country.

It’s no secret that cats were highly valued among the great civilizations. Turkey even consolidated a breed we know today as the Turkish Angora cat.

Here are some of the interesting facts about the Turkish Angora Cat, which will give you some further insight into its characteristics and temperament.

1. Turkish Angora’s History.

The longhaired Angora cat is not the source for angora sweaters, although his fur is certainly just as soft and beautiful. This natural breed takes its name from the city of Ankara in Turkey, which was formerly known as Angora. For centuries, the cats have been attractive souvenirs for invaders of or visitors to Turkey and may have been the first longhaired cats to arrive in Europe. One theory suggests that Vikings brought them from Turkey more than a thousand years ago.

The cats eventually became scarce and were saved only through a breeding program originated by the Ankara Zoo. Angoras were first brought to the United States in 19 54. Breeders took an interest in them, but it wasn’t until the mid-19 60s that recognition for the breed was sought from the Cat Fanciers Association. The CFA began registering the cats in 19 68 and granted full recognition to white Turkish Angoras in 19 72. Colored Turkish Angoras were accepted in 19 78. Today the cats are recognized by most North American cat registries.

2. Turkish Angora’s Appearance.

They are a muscular cat and should not appear thin or emaciated. The Turkish Angora is small to medium-size cat, weighing 5 to 9 pounds with a slender, delicate appearance. Angoras who originate from the Angora Zoo in Ankara, Turkey, have a somewhat more substantial build, but all Angoras have a dignified, regal disposition and carry themselves with grace.

The Angora coat is long, very soft, and comes in a wide variety of colors and variations. White is traditionally the most popular, and the lone color produced at the Ankara Zoo, but Turkish Angoras can also be found in black, reds, browns, and greys, as well as tabby, tortoiseshell, and bi-color variations.

Their heads are small and round, with wide-set ears and large, almond-shaped eyes that come in amber, green, blue, or in a heterochromatic blue and amber, or blue and green pairing.

3. Turkish Angora’s Personality.

Beautiful and elegant on the surface, the Turkish Angora can surprise an unsuspecting owner with its athleticism and intelligence. No bookcase is too high for him to reach the top, and no closed door is safe from being opened by his questing paws. While he certainly can have lovely manners, Turkish Angora is also an active, boisterous side to his nature, with a cleverness that makes him endlessly entertaining. He likes to play and will do whatever is necessary to get and keep your attention, even if it means getting into a little trouble.

The Angora keeps his kittenlike playfulness well into old age. He is friendly toward guests but loves his own people best. This is a sociable breed that is best suited to a home where he will have another cat or a dog to keep him company if people aren’t home during the day. When you are home, the Angora may drape himself across your shoulders or settle comfortably into your lap. At night you’re likely to find him next to you with his head resting on your pillow.

To live happily with a Turkish Angora, you should have a sense of humor that matches his own, as well as a good store of patience. Once he gets an idea into his head, it can be difficult to change his mind about how he should behave, but he is so charming that you probably won’t care. If you will, it’s best to consider another breed. This is an affectionate, gentle cat who is devoted to his family, but his precocious intelligence, resourcefulness, desire for interaction and play, and short attention span may make him a challenge to live with.

  1. Hey guys, does your Turkish Angora sit on your chest?
He said they don’t like to be held, but are affectionate.
Can it be consider a lap cat?

  2. The original Turkish Angora cats are pure white with blue eyes and most of them are deaf. The colored ones are mixed so they are not pure breed. In Turkey you can see Turkish angora cats in the zoos and they all white. It is forbidden to take Turkish breeds outside of the country and even when you want to change cities by plane you need to get a permission from government or they don't let you fly. They are under protection of Turkish government.

  3. Mine Turkish angora is so adorable she always plays at night and sleep during day🥺she has one blue and another yellow eye👀

  4. I have a white long haired cat who looks just like a Turkish Angora. Her features always looked a little different than regular cats, longer face and long pointed ears, I got her from a shelter when she was a kitten but she’s strikingly simillar. I wonder if I got a dna test

  5. Quick correction to that picture of the cllaw clipping, do NOT cut down to the pink part, the cat can bleed to death. I recommend you only do the tips. If you cut too far it becomes painful for them and you can end up killing them 🙁

  6. Mine is 13 years old, my grandpa used to say: he's not cat, if he could speak he would be same like us, real human. Because he acts like that. When my little brother was born, Điđi (Gigi) used to keep watch on little baby…when he cried, Điđi would meow (call mother) and scrstch the door… also he would sleep beside of him. They're so smart cats. Special cats ☺️
Ps. Điđi was born in 2008. and my brother in 2011. 😄

  7. Well, if the cat we adopted is a Turkish angora, he is indeed the center of attention! Loves the pets, will throw himself onto his back for belly rubs and make an infinite amount of cookie dough. Now that he is comfortable exploring his new home, he also got chatty!

  8. Omg haha i am in LA and have one exactly like this but I can no longer keep her ): she’s half sphinx and half regular cats that you always see she has one blue and one green :/

  9. My Ozzy is a big, fat, lump that pushes his weight around. He must investigate anything and everything we bring into the house….groceries, amazon boxes, plants…. He has a huge bed of his own, but prefers sleeping on clean laundry in the basket, my favorite comforter, sofas, cloth covered dining room chairs, the dogs bed, any dust cloth left within his reach. I love him so much but he is not quiet. He is very vocal any time he wishes to make his actions known. If left outside the bedroom, he will pull and tug at the door; all while yowling…until me or my husband lets him in. His favorite place to lay is on my ribs and shoulder (I'm a side sleeper). Did I mention he weighs 24 pounds? I adopted him and it is unclear how old he is. I have had him 9 years and he was probably 3 years old when I got him, best guess. I will say this….once he is gone, I will never own another cat again. He is solid white and I think he is more of a turkish van. He sheds so much, I have to wipe my wooden indoor stairs daily. If he brushes against me, I'm wearing a white fur coat! These are the things I will not miss. Sorry, but that is the truth.

  10. My white Angora is an indoor/outdoor cat. So sweet and beasty! She loves to hunt, kill and eat anything smaller than her. The gals are the better hunters. She is so territoriol, runs off all the other cats and dogs. If she has enough to eat she is not interested in makin babies. She loves to be the center of attention and have a place to call home!

  11. I've had cats my whole life, but my Marshmellow, Female Turkish Angora is my heart and soul, I have never had a better friend.

  12. This is my favorite cat breed :3
I kinda wish i had a angora cat ngl. I love the cats that i have already, Frida and Lilac, and i could never live without them, and 2 is quite enough (for my family at least) but i have always wanted a cat with this breed.
Or maybe if my family can get a 3rd cat….. maybe i will decide on an angora hehe

  13. Thank you for this video! I have a 1-year-old Turkish angora cat turning 2 this year in November and watching this video helped me learn more about him. I liked and subscribed since this video was so entertaining and helpful!

  14. I have a white Turkish Angora with one blue eye, and one amber eye. He is very affectionate, playful, inquisitive, social, entertaining, obedient, vocal, and athletic (he’s an excellent hunter). He has quite a massive appetite and he’s quite large but in a muscular way. He’s also very easy to train and is so affectionate towards my dog. He follows us everywhere around the house, doesn’t like being left alone for more than 1 hour (so it would be best to have another pet in the house or have someone who is always home), and he loves sleeping on my lap every evening. He knows how to entertain himself but he absolutely cherishes one-on-one daily play sessions. He gets the zoomies whenever he wakes up from a nap, or right after a meal; and it’s the funniest thing to watch!. Angoras are not stubborn, they’re actually very obedient. But you should never wait until they’re in the middle of doing something mischievous then try to stop them. You should learn their body language and cues, and anticipate when they’re about to do something they shouldn’t, and then tell them no before they even try to. This always works with mine…They also know how to keep themselves busy and amused. He loves watching birds and traffic from indoors, and I had to get him a toy bird to stop him from hunting and killing them on the balcony

  15. My cat is the only gray member from her whole family and with amber eyes, she's unbelievable clever and always stay with me
