This week we meet another ‘Wolf Killer’ – The notorious Irish Wolfhound, responsible for the demise of the last Irish Wolf in the late 1800’s. Is he as large, powerful and effective as stories of old make him out to be, or is he simply bred to be a pet now? Also is the modern Irish Wolfhound as powerful as the Old Irish Wolfhound? Find out when we visit Austonley Irish Wolfhounds in rural Britain….

  1. Family friend had one. They would take it for walks sometimes just for the fun of watching people double take. Lived an averagely short wolfhound life alas, but was a gentle, friendly, albeit not very bright, soul. We joked that if it every encountered an actual wolf, it would probably kill it trying to play with it, purely through nature of its size. Wouldn’t (deliberately) hurt a fly. Definitely had a very characteristic smell though. Not bad, just… unique.

  2. I saw one of this type of dog the other day, & although I knew they were big, seeing one in person was really something else. It wasn't just how tall he was, but the length of his body. He was very sweet, & seemed like a laid back dog. I'd love to have one if I had the space!

  3. sadly massa died at 8.5 yrs old and is still sorely missed after 10yrs, gentle loyal and gaurding when needed….cancer got her …..respect

  4. So these fluff balls basically committed genocide. Where are the vegans? Why are they not hunting all these dogs😂

  5. A childhood friend of mine had Irish wolfhounds, I think one of them was even used on an Irish tv show, I can’t remember which one.
A neighbour had one as well.
    Gentle giants

  6. Ireland & Britain were famed for their hunting dogs in Roman times – but the descriptions make them sound more like a modern lurcher. Modern Wolfhounds would never keep up with wolves.
