Koalas are captivating marsupials native to Australia. Unlike bears, to which they’re often mistakenly referred, koalas have pouches where their young, called “joeys”, develop. Sporting grey fur and a teddy-bear-like appearance, koalas spend most of their lives in eucalyptus trees. Fascinatingly, their diet consists almost entirely of eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to most creatures but koalas have specialized digestive systems that detoxify these leaves. Despite their lazy reputation, this unique diet requires lots of energy to digest, making them sleep up to 20 hours daily. Koalas have a vocal range that’s unexpectedly vast, with males emitting bellowing calls during mating seasons. Conservation efforts are ongoing, as they face habitat loss and diseases like chlamydia.
