Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Northern WI: English Setter

Grouse and Woodcock hunting from this past season in Northern Wisconsin! We joined our good friend Ted Sommers and his English Setter Fitz for an action packed hunt full of Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock action. Grouse and Woodcock hunting with a pointing dog is a ton of fun, and Jeremy and Chris used this experience to learn more about their own English Setters as they continue their own pointing dog training and journey. [Music] Ted’s a handman getting in close to the birds and I don’t yeah I don’t like talking great but no I’m saying it’s a good thing like I one of when we hunted with you we talked until you want to shot this I mean he’s flagging so I’m not going to get real serious but I’ll releas going to move just let him move yeah Woodcock yep he’s on the ground right in front of me y okay I’m going to you want to walk it up yeah it up must must be be another one it yeah she got it you for sure got it right oh yeah sit hold hold dead did good good job boys nice work a little little bird was movie I don’t it wasn’t you know it had been feeding in here or whatever he was point he pointed three or three or four spots as I moved up he moved up as I moved up he moved up and then he ended up like I was afraid to move because every time I moved he moved so I was like stopping when he would move kind of letting him go do his thing and then we just kind of jockeyed each other but I mean he went from there to there to there to here then the bird got up then he went over to here to point you know so I think that bird was around moving around in here or there’s more more than one maybe but he picked that sent up from quite a ways off that road I like this but like you said his little his little flaggin was there’s a bird here but not sure it’s not exactly in front of me that was very [Music] cool heal he looks really on top of it yeah I’m going to stay right here burd [Applause] up I missed I wonder if I need more shells I didn’t bring a lot of shells I miss didn’t work fire again [Music] yeah you heavily hunting can’t get me so excited you got to just take a deep breath you just got to slow down a little and you got to take it all in I know yeah no this is cool man swing left of them if you can jar I’m going to keep them here do you want me to go right just go or do you want me to go straight he’s not real serious here he’s looking in this is a scenario where you know every once in a while he’ll on running rout oh right boit he hovers the ground you have running Ro ahead of us y heal Chris if you can get to the trail get to the trail there right there heel I’m going to swing right Ted heal gross was up here to my left I never saw it another another one I want to see if he’ll take a cast down this Edge those birds flush I they went y out that’s a Chris bio y out real good spot for flush one off the trail without a dog in if you’re asking for for a volunteer to walk through it I’ll send Chris I’m going to this is really narrow I’m going to stay on the edge here hole here and hole here he real stocky yeah I’m going to go behind him and to the right yep right what [Applause] got it right go back go [Music] back he C he chased hard that way sure that’s what when I was talking about like with a bird in the air he got it he’s still chasing hard like I but I haven’t asked them to stop doing it so you get more sensitive to it when there’s other people around talking about like steadying their dogs at the end of the day I’m like well I can’t expect them to do something I never asked them to do in training your boy that’s a better spot happy the celebration yeah here’s your wad oh thanks buddy it didn’t connect with the bird I don’t know there’s feathers on it so this might hit it looking toward the road Jeremy yeah de wood cocky H missed it it went down right there yeah see if he reps that was some footage you get it no but it landed right here okay I want to see if he reps it this might be a different one I wonder if there’s another one right there the way he’s looking there’s got to be one there here big okay there’s a bird on the ground in front of them ready J yep I’m going to flush yep I’m going to hope goes to Chris it goes to the right off what was that dude like you [ __ ] that dog knows the difference between the Woodcock and the gross yeah he’s right he’s so much more cautious around those girls I’m going to pop into this head I’ll flush out go ahead just go go go you go he’s pointed guys 20 22 right [Music] here I got a nice little alley I’m walking [Music] up where is [Applause] he did you get it no boy oh yeah I mean I don’t think so your second shot it was it was close right behind them yeah you must have seen the bird eh I never saw it oh he was he may be pointing that bird yeah pointed 40 in front of him huh he might have your bird yeah down towards you pointing towards you [Music] Ted down yeah right over you T yep did you get him did you get it oh man that was a gray bird that was the same one bird big gray bird scared the hell out of me he took off I go y it was really high up he won the day I’ll give that yeah he gets he gets pass that one well I’m glad to see Ted Miss and not you again I’m going to take I’m going to take the gun away from you and let you cool down a little bit that’s one of the better look I thought I thought I could I saw the bird and then I saw you and I thought oh boy he’s going to he’s going to be right over the top of him he’s only 16 yards guys he’s right on the edge yep yep yep he’s looking down yard yeah he’s right in front of you looking down towards the tags yep Woody did you just try and catch that bird with your hand flying right now I know weird spot for a woodcock too well there’s tag right down there on the I thought it’d be a gr along that [Music] edge I’m going to go right [Music] here shoot wow that was pretty nice eh [Music] Chris did you get him no I let my inner conservationist go I don’t want to shoot them all I don’t want to limit out on straight I thought I shot that first one did I not hit that or was that one you Jeremy pointing stop I see him I got him golly bad shooting I really rushed it and I don’t know why I’m in a hurry on that first shot a real snapshooter watch it Chris [Music] he [Music] at [Music] 28 to your right Chris right here Chris a God gross I only had one shell in the gun here big gross sit did you see it Chris I my first trigger was empty I clicked and shot with the second trigger only takes one that’s good that’s what Jim need yeah humble not so hard on see that tail draging behind [Applause] me what I what am I do I even have the dog out here I didn’t put a shell in the first Barrel it was a click come on pointed again probably the bird was it was right on the edge of the cut where the cut meets the pines and you mean like Edge type habitat was right on the edge and then when I walked in it was a clearing about as wide as this with raspberries this high so it was pretty open curled tail everything I mean it was solid and then straight Arc straight Arc AR straight line where’s the as he slowly as he slow part slowly elevated right to left he was brown phased Chestnut in color on the breast this could be that bird this is the direction I got two shells in this time where is he right [Music] there yeah which way is he he’s facing that [Music] way [Music] left I’ll [Music] try [Music] did you get him did you really [Music] wow well he had him pinned he was right there search hey guys do you think we can tell Jeremy I hit that one yeah no seriously no just to see his face Deber I’m really dead bird dead bird dead bird good boy okay and happy roll and Happy Roll it’s about fcking time here take this out like yeah this is what this is what they look like J what’d you get you got one just in case you’re beginning to forget what they look like that looks like a Boer too good job you got one I mean you did not somebody somebody got one wow is that a big bird but I’m carrying it out I’ll say that what is that a big old bird here put it in your pouch see what it feels [Music] like like you can tell he’s like I don’t want to bump it but I want to find it yeah but he’s also not so stuck that he’s I can’t move and I’m not close enough now so I need to move but right so that’s our I think our dogs are finding the bird if the bird moves off it’s harder they’re having a harder time doing that relocation part yeah but that’s just going to take some time it’s puppy stuff
